The IOC's decision to award Russia the Winter Olympics is a huge outrage, for a number of reasons:

(1) Sochi had the lowest score of the three finalists, because it has no existing facilities. Russia will have to build them all from scratch, and it is one of the most corrupt systems of all industrialized countries.

(2) Russia is extremely poor (average wage $3/hour, average male lifespan below 60 years) and cannot afford the Olympics.

(3) Sochi is a BEACH resort. It can't be a proper winter village such as all visitors to a winter games expect.

(4) Worst of all, Sochi is right next to Chechnya, were violent rebel activity and terrorism have resulted in events like the Beslan massacre. Placing the Olympics there is just asking for another Munich.

The US should boycott the Sochi games in order to protect its athletes and not condone the outrageous IOC decision.
